Taps have sounded for another of Oconto county's few remaining Civil war veterans. Frederick Guelker, 92, whose unusual record includes service originally in the Confederate army from verily he deserted to join the Union forces, died Tuesday evening November 3, at 11 o'clock at the home of his son, Joseph, in town of How.

Death was the result of infirmities to advanced old age. He had recovered sufficiently from a stroke two years ago to be fully active, until three months ago when he became confined to bed.

Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the Evangelical church in Hayes. The Rev. H. Schoss of Gillett will officiate with interment in Pleasant Hill cemetery in town of How.

He escaped without wounds despite a war service extended over a period of four years. At war's end he was a private in Company C, 14th Regiment, Illinois Calvary. Driving a stage coach on Oconto County Lena to Hayes. A short time before the railroads came through that region he resigned the position.

Frederick Guelker was born in Germany on Jan 1, 1839, coming to this country as a young man. His first wife, to whom he was marred in 1871 in Green Bay, died 10 years later. Forty-two years ago he was married to Sophia Schults in town of How. She preceded him in death 21 years ago.

He moved from Green bay to the vicinity of Suring 46 years ago and settled on a farm in the town of How. For the past 12 years he had made his home with his son.

Survivors are: One son, Joseph, town of How , two daughters Mrs. Frank Lewis, Dragett, Mich.; Mrs Minnie (Peter) Holl, Underhill, stepchildren, Frank Schultz, Mrs. Ole Olson, Hayes; Mrs. Gust Schmidt, Cecil; and Mrs. Emma Neinke, Clintoncille; 17 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
